I-C. MARTHA JANE SIBERT (1824 – 1905), daughter of David Sibert2 (John David1)

Martha Jane Sibert was born on 30 May 1823, probably in St. Clair County, Alabama. [1] She died on 28 March 1905. [2] She married William C. Waddell on 24 September 1844 in DeKalb County, Alabama. [3] William was born on 7 April 1815 in Greenville, South Carolina. [4] He died between 15 August 1870, when he appeared in the census, and 20 September 1871 when his son was administering his estate.

Martha is buried in the Hicks Cemetery in Lonoke, Lonoke County, Arkansas. The inscription on her gravestone says: [2]

Martha J. Waddill Born May 30, 1823 Died Mar. 28, 1905.

According to the census, in 1850 William, aged 31 and born in South Carolina, and Martha, aged 25, lived in Marshall County, Alabama with John S., aged 4; David W., aged 3; Mary E., aged 2; and Julian M.S., a newborn. William was a farmer with real estate worth 500 dollars; Martha was described as illiterate. [5] William owned 30 acres of improved land and 30 acres of unimproved land. He had two horses, one mule, 13 milch cows, two working oxen, 15 other cattle, and 70 swine. He grew Indian corn and rice. [6]

William bought 40 acres in section 4 of Huntsville township in Etowah County on 10 August 1849. He later bought six 40-acre tracts in Huntsville township in Marchall County: one in section 5 on 1 March 1850, one in section 9 on 1 November 1851, one in section 9 on 1 December 1851, one in section 5 on 16 May 1854, one in section 4 on 15 July 1854, and one in section 5 on 3 October 1854. [7]

In 1860 William, aged 45 and born in South Carolina, and Martha J., aged 35, lived in Des Arc, White River, Prairie County, Arkansas with John T.[!], aged 14; David E., aged 13; Mary E., aged 12; Julia M., aged ten; Albert H., aged nine; William S., aged seven; Jasper K., aged four; and Laura, aged 2. William was a farmer with a personal estate of 1,600 dollars and real estate worth 1,500 dollars. [5]

In 1870 William, aged 55, and Martha, aged 49, lived in Hickory Plain in Prairie County with John, aged 24; Mary, aged 21; William, aged 16; Jasper, aged 14; Louisa[!], aged 11; and Emily Waddell, a 26-year-old black house servant. Henry was a farmer with real estate worth 900 dollars and a personal estate of 500 dollars. John and Mary were teachers; William and Jasper were farm laborers; Louisa was at school. Emily is described as illiterate and "idiotic."[5]

John S. Waddell was the administrator of W.C. Waddell’s will on 20 September 1871. He and [his mother] M.J. Waddell posted a bond that day. [8]

In 1880 Martha, aged 56, was a widow. She lived with her son Jasper, aged 22, and Emma Waddell, aged 35, in White River in Prairie County. Jasper was described as a single farmer who was unable to write. Emma was described as deaf and dumb and idiotic. In 1900 Martha, born in May 1820[!], lived with her widowed daughter Mary Parker, born in November 1849, in Lonoke in Lonoke County.  Also living with Mary were her children—Mary M, born in August 1875; Josephine E., born in December 1880; and Florence A., born in May 1883 in Arkansas—and Emiline Waddell, a black servant born in July 1843. Martha was the mother of 12 children, and four were living; her daughter Mary was the mother of eight children, and five, all born in Arkansas, were living. Mary M. was a seamstress, and Josephine and Florence went to school. [5]

Children of William C. Waddell and Martha Jane Sibert:

I-C-1. John S. Waddell was born in January 1846 in Alabama. [4][5] He died of heart failure on 9 February 1913 in Fairview, Graham County, Arizona. [4][9] He married Henrietta Caroline Holliday on 18 December 1884 in Pima, Graham County. [10] Henrietta was the daughter of Thomas Middleton Wiley Holladay, born in North Carolina, and Ann Mathews, born in Mississippi. [11][12][13] She was born on 10 May 1869 in Santaquin, Utah County, Utah. [5][11][13] She died on 12 April 1945 at the Pioneer's Home in Prescott, Yavapai County, Arizona. [13][14] She was buried in Safford County. [13]

John was buried in the Glenbar Cemetery in Glenbar, Graham County. [2]

John was a farmer. [4]

In 1900 John, born in January 1846 in Alabama, and Henrietta, born in May 1869 in Utah, lived in Graham County, Arizona Territory. John was a postmaster. [5] In 1910 John, age 54, and Henrietta, aged 40, lived in Graham. John was a farmer and a veteran of the Civil War. Henrietta was the mother of 11 children and nine were living. [5]

John died intestate. Henrietta petitioned for letters of administration on his estate on 12 December 1914. This was granted on 6 January 1915. Henrietta reported on 16 August 1915 that his real estate had sold for 1,350 dollars. The estate papers list his children, their ages, and residences. [9]

In 1920 Henrietta lived in Pima with her children and her father, Thomas W. Holliday. She worked as a "wash woman." In 1940 Henrietta, age 71, lived with the family of one of her daughters in Maricopa County. [5]

I-C-2. David Edmond Waddell is said to have been born on 7 May 1847 in DeKalb County, Alabama. [2] This is consistent with census entries which suggest he was born about 1847. He was alive in 1860, but does not show up with his parents in the 1870 census.

I-C-3. Mary ("Molly") Elizabeth Waddell was born on 24 November 1848 in Alabama. She died of influenza on 25 December 1922 in Arkansas. [15, parents names given][16] She married Samuel Houston Parker, age 22, on 15 May 1873 in Prairie County, Arkansas. [2][17] Samuel was born about 1850/1852 in Mississippi or Tennessee. He died on 18 October 1888. [2] He is buried in in the Hicks Cemetery in Lonoke, Lonoke County, Arkansas. [2]

Mary is buried in the Hicks Cemetery. The inscription on her gravestone says, "Mary E Parker Nov 24 1848 Dec 25 1922." [2]

In 1880 Samuel, age 28 and born in Tennessee, and Mary E., age 32 and born in Alabama, lived in Eagle, Lonoke County with their children. Samuel was a farmer. [5]

Mary M. Parker, the daughter of Samuel H. Parker, born in Mississippi, and Molly Parker, born in Alabama, died on 13 July 1923 of tetanus, after stepping on a nail. [15]

I-C-4. Julia Ann Martha Waddell is said to have been born on 7 April 1850 in Alabama and to have died on 22 July 1865. [2] This is consistent with the census entries which suggest she was born in 1850 and died between 1860, when she appeared with her parents in the census, and 1870, when she did not.

I-C-5. Albert Henry Waddell is said to have been born on 17 October 1851 in Alabama and to have died on 22 October 1862. [2] This is consistent with the census entries which suggest he was born about 1851 and died between 1860, when he appeared with his parents in the census, and 1870, when he did not.

I-C-6. William Rhodes Waddell was born on 25 December 1854 or 1855 [5] in Alabama. [13, parents names] He died of pneumonia on 30 March 1935 in Safford, Graham County, Arizona. [2][13] He married first Lora (Sarah) F. Quin, age 21, on 30 July 1876 in Prairie County, Arizona. [15] Sarah (Lora) was born on 7 March 1855 and died in 1878. [2] He married second Martha Jane West. Martha was born on 28 June 1861 in North Carolina. She died on 2 May 1939 in Graham County. [9]

William and Martha are buried together in the Safford City Cemetery. The inscriptions on their gravestones say [2]:

Father / William R. Waddill / Dec. 25, 1853 / Mar. 30, 1935
Mother / Martha Jane Waddill / June 28, 1869 / May 2, 1939.

Lora is probably the L.F. Quin, age 15 and born in South Carolina, who was living with her apparent parents J.J. and S.A. Quin in White River, Prairie County in 1870. [5] The inscription on Sarah's gravestone in the Joseph City Cemetery in Navajo County, Arizona says, "Sarah Francis Quin Waddell / March 7 1855–1789." [2]

Albert Lowell Wadell's death certificate says his parents were William R. Wadell, born in Alabama, and Martha Jane West, born in North Carolina. [4]

William registered to vote in Arizona on 31 July 1886. He was living in Pima, Graham County. [18]

William was a farmer. [13] He bought 155 acres in Arizona on 18 September 1890. [19]

In 1900 William, born in December 1855 in Alabama, and Martha J., born in June 1861 in North Carolina, lived in Graham County. William was a farmer. Martha had had six children and they were all living. [5]

Martha Jane left her estate to her children. Probate was on 27 May 1939. [9]

I-C-7. Jasper R. Waddell was born about 1856 or 1858 in Alabama. He may have died by 26 January 1900. Jasper is probably the J.R. Waddell of Des Arc, Prairie, Arkansas, born about 1858, who married Georgia Rodgers of Lonoke on 30 January 1898 in Lonoke County. [17] Georgia Ann is said to be the daughter of George Henry and Lurenia Emeline (Butler) Stewart. She was born on 8 December 1876 in Lonoke, died on 2 July 1953 in Safford, Graham County, Arizona, and is buried in the Safford City Cemetery in Safford. She is said to have married first John Clinton Rogers and third John Wesley Parker on 26 January 1900. John is said to be Jasper's nephew, the son of his sister Laura. [6]

In 1870 Jasper was a laborer and living with his parents in Hickory Plain. In 1880 Jasper was a farmer in White River in Prairie County. [7]

I-C-8. Laura M. Waddell was born in December 1858 in Alabama. She died on 26 July 1929 and is buried in the Graham Cemetery in Graham, Graham County, Arizona. [2] She married Little Berry Parker of Lonoke County on 29 December 1875 in Prairie County. [17] Little Berry was probably the son of Jacob J. and Elizabeth H. Parker. He was born about 1855. Laura married second Jesse E. Wanslee on 2 July 1890 in Graham County, Arizona. [20] He was born on 4 December 1836 or 1837 in Georgia. He died on 3 November 1908. He is buried in the Safford City Cemetery in Safford, Graham County. [2]

The inscription on Laura's gravestone says, "Mother / Laura Mahulda Wanslee / 1858–1929." [2] This is apparently the only place her middle name is found.

The inscription on Jesse's gravestone says, "Jesse Cleveland Wanslee / Pvt Co H GA Cav / Confederate States Army / Dec 4 1837 Nov 3 1908." [2]

Matilda Tennessee Foote's death certificate says she was the daughter of Berry Parker, born in Tennessee, and Laura Waddell, born in Alabama. [13]

According to the census, in 1870 Littlebury Parker, age 15, lived with his apparent parents Jacob J. and Elizabeth H. Parker in Prairie, Pulaski County, Arkansas. [5]

In 1880 L. Berry Parker, age 25 and born in Arkansas, and Laura M. Parker, age 21 and born in Alabama, lived in Eagle, Lonoke County, Arkansas. [5]

In 1900 Jesse, born in December 1836 in Georgia, and Laura M., born in December 1858 in Alabama, lived in Graham County, Arizona Territory with children from both of Laura's marriages. Laura was the mother of nine children and six were living. [5] In 1910 Laura was a 52-year-old widow. She lived with two of her children in Graham County and was a farmer. [5] in 1920 Laura was a 61-year-old widow. She lived alone in Safford, Graham County. [5]

I-C-9. Susan Waddell (twin) is said to have been born and to have died on 18 July 1860 in Prairie County. [2]

I-C-10. Hasky Waddell (twin) is said to have been born and to have died on 18 July 1860 in Prairie County.

I-C-11. Josephine Valentine Waddell is said to have been born on 19 July 1861 in Prairie County and to have died there in November 1862.

I-C-12. Clayborn Lafayette Wesley Waddell is said to have been born on 23 July 1867 in Prairie County and to have died there on 26 September 1868.
